About the artist Michael Keller

Michael Keller was born in the small town of Nowra, New South Wales, Australia in 1980. At the age of 16, he left home and moved to Narrabeen, a suburb of Sydney and an iconic surfing mecca. Here he financed his surfing lifestyle by creating landscape paintings for a local gallery and accepting all manner of artistic work, from sign painting to tattoo design. For the next 12 years, Michael used his artistic talents to finance a life of travel, surfing and creativity. He lived, surfed and painted in New Zealand, South Africa, Namibia, Southeast England and Mexico. Keller’s work has evolved over time into expressionist studies of memories from his travels. Realism is secondary to mood and feeling, as oils are applied liberally and rapidly with brush and palette knife. Keller aims to “convey a sense of place with a minimum of embellishment –to distill the moment to its essence.” He adds, “The work should never come out of a tortured thought process, but spontaneously, and without looking back.”
